HSA/FSA night guard guide
Updated September 1, 2026 with current IRS guidance and Sentinel's TrueMed payment option.
If you have money in a Health Savings Account (HSA) or Flexible Spending Account (FSA), you may be wondering whether you can use those tax-advantaged funds for a custom night guard.
Custom night guards may qualify for HSA or FSA spending when the purchase meets applicable medical-expense and plan requirements. HSA/FSA funds are not dental insurance, and eligibility is not automatic for every purchase. Sentinel offers TrueMed to help qualified customers determine eligibility and use HSA/FSA funds toward eligible purchases.
Are night guards HSA/FSA eligible?
A custom night guard purchased for an appropriate medical or dental purpose may qualify as a medical expense under applicable HSA or FSA rules.
IRS Publication 502 defines medical expenses broadly as costs for the diagnosis, cure, mitigation, treatment or prevention of disease, as well as expenses affecting a structure or function of the body. The IRS specifically includes qualifying dental expenses within medical expenses.
Publication 502 does not provide an exhaustive product-by-product list naming every type of oral appliance, however. Whether a particular purchase qualifies can depend on its purpose, the circumstances of the individual purchase and applicable plan-administrator requirements.
Important: A product having a health-related use does not automatically make every purchase HSA/FSA eligible. The reason for the expense and any required documentation matter.
Does an HSA “cover” a night guard?
Technically, an HSA does not cover a night guard the way dental insurance might.
An HSA is a tax-advantaged account that can be used to pay or reimburse qualified medical expenses. If an eligible night guard expense qualifies under the applicable rules, HSA funds may be used instead of ordinary after-tax dollars.
The same general concept applies to a health FSA, although the way the accounts are funded, owned and carried forward is different.
HSA
Health Savings Account
HSAs are available to eligible individuals enrolled in qualifying high-deductible health plans. Funds generally remain in the account from year to year and stay with the account holder.
FSA
Flexible Spending Account
Health FSAs are generally employer-sponsored. They are commonly subject to plan-year rules, although an employer's plan may permit a limited carryover or grace period.
Current IRS Publication 969 contains the detailed federal rules for HSAs, health FSAs and other tax-favored health plans.
When might a custom night guard qualify?
The purpose of the purchase matters.
A night guard obtained to help protect the teeth from the effects of diagnosed or clinically relevant grinding or clenching is different from buying a general wellness product without a medical or dental purpose.
The IRS definition of a qualified medical expense focuses on diagnosis, treatment, mitigation and prevention—not simply whether a product is sold in a health-related category.
Because individual circumstances differ, Sentinel does not make tax-eligibility determinations for customers.
Sentinel + TrueMed
How does HSA/FSA payment work at Sentinel?
Sentinel has partnered with TrueMed to provide an HSA/FSA payment pathway for qualified customers.
When you select TrueMed during the Sentinel checkout process, TrueMed guides you through its qualification flow. An independent licensed clinician reviews the health information provided and determines whether the purchase qualifies through the TrueMed process.
When applicable, TrueMed provides supporting documentation such as a Letter of Medical Necessity and enables qualified customers to pay with HSA/FSA funds.
The detailed screenshots and step-by-step Sentinel checkout instructions live in our separate Sentinel + TrueMed guide →
How do I use HSA/FSA funds for a Sentinel night guard?
For customers using Sentinel's TrueMed option, the basic process is straightforward:
Select the custom appliance that fits your needs and proceed toward checkout.
TrueMed is integrated into the Sentinel shopping and checkout experience for eligible products.
Provide the requested health information for review by an independent licensed clinician.
Depending on the TrueMed flow, qualified customers may pay with an HSA/FSA card or use the supported reimbursement process.
Do you need a Letter of Medical Necessity for a night guard?
Whether supporting documentation is required can depend on the nature of the expense and the administrator responsible for the account.
A Letter of Medical Necessity, or LMN, documents the medical reason that a particular product or service is being recommended for an individual.
TrueMed uses independent licensed clinicians to review qualification and, when appropriate under its process, issue an LMN to support the eligible purchase.
TrueMed currently states that LMNs it issues are valid for 12 months. Customers should retain the documentation together with their receipt in case their HSA or FSA administrator requests substantiation.
An LMN or TrueMed qualification does not override the terms of an HSA or FSA plan. The applicable administrator retains authority over reimbursement.
Can I pay with a regular card and reimburse myself later?
In some circumstances, yes.
TrueMed supports both direct HSA/FSA-card payment and reimbursement workflows, depending on the merchant integration and purchase path.
If you use a personal credit or debit card and plan to seek reimbursement, retain your receipt and any supporting documentation generated through the qualification process.
How much can using HSA or FSA funds save?
Average savings cited by TrueMed
TrueMed says its qualified customers save an average of about 30% when eligible purchases are paid for using pre-tax HSA/FSA dollars instead of ordinary after-tax income.
That is not a 30% discount on the Sentinel purchase price.
The potential benefit comes from using tax-advantaged dollars. Actual savings vary according to the customer's tax situation, eligibility and applicable account rules.
HSA/FSA vs. dental insurance: what's the difference?
Dental insurance and HSA/FSA accounts solve two different financial questions.
Dental insurance determines whether an insurer will pay all or part of a covered dental service under a policy.
An HSA or FSA contains tax-advantaged funds that can be used for qualifying healthcare expenses.
This means a dental-insurance denial does not automatically determine whether an expense can qualify for HSA/FSA use. Likewise, HSA/FSA eligibility does not obligate your dental insurer to reimburse the purchase.

What documentation should I keep?
Good recordkeeping can make HSA/FSA substantiation easier if your administrator requests it.
- Your purchase receipt or itemized invoice
- Any Letter of Medical Necessity issued through the qualification process
- TrueMed qualification documentation
- Any additional records requested by your account administrator
Requirements differ, so follow the instructions provided by your own HSA or FSA administrator.
