Magnesium is essential for normal muscle and nerve function, so it is easy to see why people wonder whether taking more of it could calm an overactive jaw. But the leap from “magnesium helps muscles function normally” to “magnesium stops teeth grinding” is much larger than it sounds.

At this point, there is not strong clinical evidence showing that magnesium supplements reliably prevent or treat bruxism. Magnesium may still matter for someone who is genuinely deficient or has inadequate intake, but that is a different question from using magnesium as a proven teeth-grinding treatment.

Magnesium has not been proven to stop teeth grinding. It plays an important role in normal nerve and muscle function, and researchers have proposed possible connections between magnesium status, stress regulation and muscle activity. Why Is Magnesium Linked to Teeth Grinding?

Magnesium is a mineral the body needs for hundreds of normal biochemical processes. Among its better-established roles are helping regulate nerve signaling and muscle function.

That creates a plausible theory: if magnesium status affects neuromuscular function, perhaps inadequate magnesium could influence jaw-muscle activity in some people.

Researchers have also explored how magnesium may interact with stress-response pathways and nervous-system excitability. A recent review discussed several biological mechanisms through which nutritional insufficiencies, including magnesium inadequacy, might theoretically influence bruxism-related muscle activity.

Biological plausibility is not the same as proof of treatment. A mechanism can make scientific sense without demonstrating that taking a supplement actually reduces grinding episodes in people.

What Does the Research Actually Show?

The direct research on magnesium supplementation specifically for bruxism is remarkably thin.

Does Magnesium Deficiency Cause Bruxism?

There is no good evidence that magnesium deficiency is a routine or primary cause of teeth grinding.

Severe magnesium deficiency can affect the nervous and muscular systems, but clinically significant deficiency is different from simply eating less magnesium than recommended.

This is an important distinction because claims such as “most Americans are magnesium deficient” can be misleading.

What we cannot say is that correcting magnesium deficiency will necessarily stop bruxism.

A person could be low in magnesium and grind their teeth for unrelated reasons. Conversely, someone with perfectly adequate magnesium status could still have significant sleep or awake bruxism.

Which Type of Magnesium Is Best for Teeth Grinding?

No form of magnesium — including magnesium glycinate, citrate, oxide or chloride — has been proven to be the best treatment for bruxism.

Different magnesium compounds do vary in absorption and gastrointestinal tolerability. For example, some more soluble forms are generally absorbed more completely than magnesium oxide.

But better absorption does not automatically make a supplement better for teeth grinding.

Claims that magnesium glycinate is specifically “best for bruxism,” “best for jaw tension” or uniquely calming should be treated cautiously unless supported by clinical evidence specific to those outcomes.

How Much Magnesium Do Adults Need?

There is no established magnesium dose for treating or preventing bruxism.

General recommended dietary amounts are based on nutritional needs, not teeth grinding.

This is another reason not to interpret the nutritional recommendation of 400–420 mg as permission to take that amount in supplement form.

Can You Get Enough Magnesium From Food?

Many people can obtain meaningful amounts of magnesium through ordinary foods.

Good dietary sources include:

  • Leafy green vegetables such as spinach
  • Beans and other legumes
  • Nuts and seeds
  • Whole grains
  • Fortified cereals
  • Milk, yogurt and some other dairy foods

Eating magnesium-rich foods can support overall nutritional adequacy without turning a healthy mineral into a self-prescribed bruxism treatment.

Can Magnesium Improve Sleep and Therefore Reduce Grinding?

This is another appealing theory, but it should not be overstated.

Sleep bruxism occurs within the physiology of sleep, and some people with bruxism also have disrupted sleep or sleep-related conditions. That does not mean that improving sleep with a supplement will necessarily reduce grinding.

Even if magnesium improves a person's sleep for another reason, that does not establish that it treats sleep bruxism itself.

Loud snoring, witnessed breathing pauses, gasping or significant daytime sleepiness deserve separate medical evaluation rather than treatment with magnesium or a standard night guard alone.

Does Magnesium Help Stress-Related Clenching?

Magnesium has been studied in relation to stress and anxiety, including in people with low magnesium status. But evidence that magnesium improves stress does not automatically translate into evidence that it stops bruxism.

Stress and emotional tension can be associated with awake clenching in some people, so addressing stress may still be useful when it is clearly part of the pattern.

What About Magnesium and Vitamin B6?

Magnesium and vitamin B6 are sometimes sold or discussed together for stress, nervous-system function and other wellness goals.

There is not convincing evidence that combining vitamin B6 with magnesium stops teeth grinding.

Claims that B-complex vitamins can “cure,” “control” or eliminate bruxism should therefore be treated cautiously unless a specific deficiency has been identified and appropriately managed.

Can Taking Too Much Magnesium Be Harmful?

Yes. Magnesium from food is generally not a concern in healthy people because the kidneys regulate excess amounts.

Supplements are different.

Too much supplemental magnesium can cause diarrhea, nausea and abdominal cramping. Extremely high amounts can produce much more serious effects.

People with impaired kidney function are at greater risk of magnesium toxicity because the kidneys may not remove excess magnesium normally.

Rather than assuming that grinding means you need more magnesium, look at the broader pattern.

Possible contributors to bruxism can include stress, medications, caffeine, alcohol, smoking, genetics and other individual factors. Awake and sleep bruxism can also behave differently.
