The objective is not to suggest that one guard is right for everyone. It is to help patients understand why different patterns of grinding and clenching may call for different materials and levels of protection.

The Comfort Guard
A single-layer soft EVA appliance designed for patients who prioritize comfort and adaptability.
I evaluated Sentinel's Comfort Guard against the standards I use for any soft occlusal appliance. Its pure EVA construction is well suited to light clenching and sensitivity, and it's a genuinely well made guard for that purpose. Overall impression
The Comfort Guard is a straightforward single layer soft EVA appliance, and it's honestly positioned. Sentinel markets it for light clenching and sensitivity rather than overstating what a soft guard can do. That restraint matters clinically, since soft, resilient guards are the right tool for a narrower band of patients than hard guards.
Fit and adaptation
Soft EVA adapts readily to tooth contours and is generally well tolerated from the first night, which is the main clinical argument for this category of material. The tradeoff is that soft materials also deform and compress under sustained load, so patients with genuinely stronger bruxing forces will feel less protected over time, even if the guard still feels comfortable.
Manufacturing quality and finish
Based on the specifications, the hand finishing and impression/scan based fabrication process mirrors the workflow of a conventional dental lab. The 2mm uniform thickness is consistent with what I'd expect from a properly seated soft guard.
Materials and intended clinical use
EVA is a well established, biocompatible material for this application. It is not, however, the material I'd reach for with a patient who has moderate to severe bruxism. Soft guards can wear through or get “chewed” by stronger grinders faster than laminated or rigid designs.
Best suited for
Patients with mild to moderate clenching, sensitive teeth or gums, or those who've struggled to tolerate rigid guards in the past.
Primary strength
Comfort and ease of adaptation.
Important limitation
Soft guards have a shorter effective lifespan under heavier grinding forces. Patients who wake with significant jaw pain or headaches may be better served by a laminated or hard design.
For the patient population it's marketed to, this is a sensible, appropriately scoped appliance. I'd encourage anyone unsure of their own grinding severity to have it assessed by their dentist before choosing a soft guard over a more protective option.
Not all clenching happens while you sleep.
Daytime clenching presents a different challenge from nighttime bruxism. An appliance worn while awake must account for speech, visibility, comfort and the natural movement of the tongue and cheeks during normal daily activities.

Sentinel's No-Show Day Guard fills a real gap for patients with mild to moderate daytime clenching who need something thin enough to wear while talking and working. Overall impression
Daytime clenching is a different clinical problem than nighttime bruxism, and it calls for a different appliance. A patient can't wear a full-thickness night guard through a workday of talking and eating, so the No-Show Day Guard's positioning around discretion and thinness is the right design goal for this use case.
Fit and adaptation
At 2mm and intended for mild to moderate grinding only, this guard needs to be thin enough to allow near-normal speech while still providing a barrier between the arches. That's a narrower design margin than a night guard has, since there's less room to add bulk for comfort without compromising the “no-show” claim.
Fit precision matters more here, not less, because a guard that shifts or feels bulky during conversation is one patients will stop wearing.
Manufacturing quality and finish
The same custom impression- or scan-based fabrication and hand finishing process applies. For a daytime appliance, smooth, unobtrusive borders matter even more than on a night guard, since the guard is in near-constant contact with the tongue and cheeks during normal function rather than sitting passively during sleep.
Materials and intended clinical use
This guard is appropriately scoped to mild to moderate bruxism rather than positioned as a solution for heavier grinding, which is the right call for a low-profile daytime appliance.
One thing I'd want patients to understand clearly: a day guard manages the mechanical effects of clenching, but it doesn't address the underlying habit. Daytime clenching is often stress- or posture-related, and behavioral awareness strategies, such as noticing and breaking the clench during the day, are usually the actual first-line approach, with an appliance as a helpful adjunct rather than a standalone fix.

Patients with mild to moderate daytime clenching who need a discreet option they can wear during work, conversation or social situations, not patients with heavy grinding or significant TMD symptoms.

The Durability Guard is the thickest appliance in the evaluated lineup. Dr. Grillo emphasizes that this substantial 3mm design should be reserved for patients whose severe bruxism has been confirmed, ideally by a dentist, rather than selected solely through self-diagnosis.
Intended for destructive grinding forces, documented enamel wear or a history of cracking thinner appliances.

Overall impression
This is the most protective design in the lineup by a meaningful margin, 3mm of high-strength copolyester versus 2mm elsewhere, and Sentinel's own guidance ties it to dentist-confirmed severe bruxism rather than self-diagnosis.
That's the correct clinical gate for a guard this substantial, which means it could serve as a replacement or extra appliance on a previously treated case.
Fit and adaptation
Extra thickness increases the margin for error if the fit isn't precise. A loose 3mm guard is more noticeable and more likely to cause bite discomfort than a loose 2mm one.
Precision of the impression or scan matters more here than for any other guard in the range, and patients should expect a brief adaptation period simply due to the added occlusal thickness and its effect on tongue space and speech.
Manufacturing quality and finish
The same hand-finishing workflow applies as with the Hard Guard. At this thickness, smooth internal and border finishing is especially important, since any rough spot has more surface area of hard material in sustained contact with soft tissue.
Materials and intended clinical use
High-strength copolyester at 3mm is a reasonable engineering response to genuinely heavy destructive forces. Patients described as having cracked guards from wear may benefit from the added bulk.
As with the Hard Guard, this material isn't chairside-adjustable in the way acrylic is, which is a real consideration for a patient whose severe bruxism may also involve TMD requiring more nuanced occlusal management by a dentist.
Best suited for
Patients with dentist-confirmed severe bruxism, documented enamel damage or a history of cracking thinner guards. This is not a starting point for someone who simply suspects they grind heavily.
Primary strength
Meaningful added durability for patients who have genuinely destroyed thinner guards.
Important limitation
The added bulk means fit precision and a brief adjustment period matter more, and it isn't a substitute for a dentist managing a complex TMD picture.
Appropriately positioned as the guard for patients who've already established, ideally with a dentist, that their bruxism is severe. I would not recommend it as a first guard for someone without that history.
