
Night guard stains & discoloration
Updated September 1, 2026 to clarify the causes of yellowing, cloudiness and surface buildup and to separate stain removal from routine night guard cleaning.
A night guard that started out clear can eventually become yellow, cloudy or covered with white-looking deposits. That does not necessarily mean the guard is dirty—and it does not always mean the discoloration can be completely removed.
The first step is figuring out what kind of discoloration you are actually seeing.
Yellowing can come from surface staining, accumulated film, pigments from foods or drinks, or gradual changes in the material itself. White or chalky areas may be deposits rather than stains. Start with normal cleaning and, when appropriate, an oral-appliance cleaner compatible with your guard. If the color remains after the surface is clean, the change may be within the material and may not be reversible.
Why is my night guard turning yellow?
Night guards spend hours in a warm, moist oral environment. Over time, their appearance can change for several different reasons.
Saliva and oral debris can leave a film on an appliance, especially when it is not cleaned soon after use.
Pigments from foods, drinks, tobacco or other substances can contribute to surface discoloration.
Salivary minerals can leave whitish, cloudy or chalky deposits that may feel different from the surrounding surface.
Polymers can change appearance with age, use and environmental exposure. A color change within the material itself may not scrub or soak away.
Yellow stain, white buildup or cloudy plastic?
Color alone does not tell you the cause. Look at the texture and location too.

Important distinction
A discolored night guard is not automatically an unsafe night guard
Appearance alone cannot tell you whether a night guard is contaminated, damaged or needs replacement.
A guard can be clean and still look less clear than it did when new. Likewise, a clear-looking guard can still have surface residue if it has not been cleaned properly.
Evaluate discoloration together with the guard's surface condition, odor, fit and structural integrity.
How to remove stains from a night guard
Start with the least aggressive method. The goal is to remove material sitting on the appliance without unnecessarily attacking the appliance itself.
Step 1: Clean the surface thoroughly
Rinse the night guard with cool or lukewarm water. Using a soft-bristled toothbrush and a small amount of mild or neutral liquid soap, gently clean all surfaces.
Rinse thoroughly and inspect the guard again after it is clean.
Step 2: Look at what remains
If the yellowing disappears or lightens, at least part of the discoloration was likely surface-related.
If you can still see a distinct deposit, an oral-appliance cleaning product may be helpful if it is compatible with your specific guard material.
Step 3: Use a compatible oral-appliance cleaner if needed
Effervescent tablets and other products intended for removable dental appliances can help loosen certain surface deposits.
Follow the cleaner's instructions for concentration and exposure time rather than extending the soak in an attempt to remove a stubborn stain.
Step 4: Know when to stop
If the appliance is clean and smooth but the yellow or cloudy color remains, continued chemical soaking may not accomplish anything.
Some discoloration is within the material rather than sitting on its surface. In that situation, stronger cleaning does not necessarily mean a clearer guard.
Can an ultrasonic cleaner remove night guard stains?
Ultrasonic cleaning can help loosen surface debris and deposits by creating high-frequency agitation in liquid. That can make it useful when material is sitting on the surface or trapped in small contours.
But an ultrasonic cleaner cannot reverse every kind of discoloration. If the polymer itself has changed color, mechanical cleaning will not necessarily restore its original clarity.

Should you use vinegar or hydrogen peroxide to remove yellowing?
Vinegar and hydrogen peroxide are common ingredients in homemade night guard cleaning recipes, including older versions of this article.
We no longer recommend a blanket vinegar-and-peroxide protocol for every night guard.
Sentinel guards may contain flexible EVA, rigid copolyester or a layered combination of the two. Chemical compatibility depends on the material, concentration and exposure time, and evidence from one type of dental appliance should not automatically be applied to another.
For this reason, we prefer a simple cleaning routine first and a cleaner specifically intended for an oral appliance when additional deposit removal is needed.
What about baking soda?
Baking soda is frequently recommended online as a stain-removing paste because it is mildly abrasive.
But abrasion is exactly why we do not make it our default recommendation for a clear polymer appliance. If a surface is already scratched or cloudy, additional abrasive scrubbing is unlikely to restore its original finish.
A soft toothbrush and mild liquid soap are the simpler starting point.
What not to use to remove night guard stains
- Boiling or very hot water: excessive heat can distort a thermoplastic appliance and alter its fit.
- Household bleach or surface disinfectants: these are not default oral-appliance cleaners.
- Harsh abrasive scrubbing: aggressive abrasion can change the surface rather than restore it.
- Unverified overnight chemical soaks: longer exposure is not automatically better.
- Mixed cleaning chemicals: do not combine cleaning products unless the manufacturer specifically instructs you to do so.
Routine care
Preventing buildup is easier than removing it
This article is intentionally focused on discoloration and deposits, not the entire night guard cleaning routine.
For daily care, we recommend cleaning the guard after use with cool or lukewarm water, a soft toothbrush and mild liquid soap, then rinsing and allowing it to dry before storage.

Does yellowing mean I need a new night guard?
Not necessarily.
Color change by itself is different from structural failure. A night guard may still be intact even if it no longer looks perfectly clear.
Replacement becomes a different question when you see problems such as:
- Cracks or splits
- A hole worn through the material
- Sharp or damaged edges
- A major change in fit
- Missing pieces

What if the problem is white spots or marks instead of yellowing?
Not every visible change is a stain.

Can I use vinegar to remove yellow stains?
We do not recommend a universal vinegar soak for every night guard. Material, concentration and exposure time matter, so use a cleaning method compatible with the specific appliance.
Can hydrogen peroxide whiten a night guard?
Hydrogen peroxide may affect certain surface contaminants, but that does not mean it can reverse discoloration within the night guard material. Sentinel does not use household peroxide as a universal stain-removal protocol across all guard types.
Can I scrub stains with baking soda?
We prefer to avoid abrasive pastes as the default approach. Start with a soft toothbrush and mild liquid soap, then use a compatible oral-appliance cleaner if needed.
Does yellowing mean my night guard is dirty?
Not necessarily. A clean polymer appliance can remain discolored because appearance and surface cleanliness are not the same thing.
Should I replace a stained night guard?
Staining alone does not automatically mean replacement is necessary. Structural damage, severe wear, fit changes and persistent problems with the appliance are more useful factors to evaluate.
The bottom line
A yellow or cloudy night guard is not always simply “dirty.”
First clean the surface gently and determine what remains. Surface residue and some deposits may improve with appropriate cleaning, while discoloration within the material may remain even when the appliance is clean.
The goal is not to keep escalating to stronger homemade chemicals until the guard looks brand new. It is to keep the appliance clean, preserve its fit and material, and recognize when what you're seeing is a stain, a deposit, ordinary wear—or a permanent cosmetic change.
