
If teeth grinding has worn down your enamel, you may have seen advice suggesting that remineralization can “grow the enamel back.” That sounds encouraging — but it misunderstands what remineralization can actually do.

Can Enamel Grow Back After Grinding?
No. Mature tooth enamel does not regenerate in the way skin or bone can heal.
If grinding has shortened your front teeth, flattened molar cusps or physically removed enamel, your body cannot simply manufacture that missing tooth structure again.
This is why statements such as “remineralization grows new enamel” can be misleading.

What If Grinding and Acid Erosion Are Happening Together?
This is where the subject becomes more interesting.
A tooth does not have to experience only one type of wear.
Enamel that is repeatedly exposed to acids may become more vulnerable to physical wear. Acid exposure can come from sources such as acidic foods and beverages or stomach acid from reflux or repeated vomiting.
If someone also grinds or clenches, chemical and mechanical forces may be acting on the teeth at the same time.

A balanced diet supports oral and general health, and saliva naturally supplies minerals involved in enamel remineralization.
But eating calcium-rich foods should not be presented as a treatment that rebuilds teeth worn down by grinding.
From an enamel perspective, reducing frequent exposure to sugars and acids can be particularly useful because repeated acid attacks favor demineralization.
Water is also a tooth-friendly choice between meals, particularly when it contains fluoride.
Can Grinding Make Teeth More Sensitive?

Sensitivity can have many other causes as well, including decay, erosion, gum recession and cracked teeth.

How Do You Protect Enamel From Further Grinding Damage?
Remineralization and mechanical protection address two different problems.
Fluoride and saliva can support the mineral health of enamel that remains.
A night guard, when appropriate, provides a physical contact surface between the upper and lower teeth so that repeated grinding does not occur directly against opposing natural tooth surfaces.
The night guard does not grow enamel back and does not guarantee that bruxism will stop.
